Prayagraj, historically known as Allahabad, stands at the sacred Triveni Sangam - the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in India and the host of the world's largest human gathering, the Kumbh Mela.
A bathe at the Sangam is believed to wash away sins and grant liberation, and every twelve years the city swells with tens of millions of pilgrims for the Maha Kumbh - a spectacle unmatched anywhere on earth.
Beyond its spiritual fame, Prayagraj carries a rich colonial and freedom-struggle heritage, from the mighty Allahabad Fort built by Akbar to the elegant Anand Bhawan, the ancestral home of the Nehru family.

On NH-19, Varanasi is ~120 km (3 hrs), Lucknow ~200 km (4 hrs) and Ayodhya ~170 km (3-4 hrs). Buses and taxis are plentiful.
The cool, dry winter months are the best time to visit Prayagraj, coinciding with the Magh Mela and, in its years, the great Kumbh Mela at the Sangam.
